Tsodilo Hills Tour

The Kalahari Skies Tsodilo Hills Tour offers the Botswana visitor a different type of experience than the “typical” wildlife and game viewing safaris. The trip provides the visitor with information and insights to the ancient history and culture of the area and to some extent, the geological forces that shaped the African continent. This an excellent “add-on” to any of the other tours we do or it can be done as “stand alone” trip for those people that do not have lots time or are interested in the other aspects of the country. This is also a nice tour for those that want some “physical” activity as we do lots of hiking and exploring once we get to the Hills.
Tour Description:
This tour normally starts out of Maun with a drive of 5 to 6 hours through the Ngamiland District, skirting the edge of the Okavango Delta north to the Tsodilo Hills – a pack lunch and drinks are provided for en-route to the hills.
On arrival to the hills, camp is set up and then we will spend the next two days exploring the different trails, looking at the rock paintings, artifacts and the beautiful scenery. There are 3 rock painting and artifact trails – the Rhino, the Cliff and the Lion trails – and one scenic and more physical trail, the Male Hill Summit Trail.
While we are exploring the rock painting trails, our guides will explain to you different aspects of these ancient relics – how and when they were painted, what were the significance to these old cultures, as well as hearing some of the folklore that surrounds them. You will also find out how the hills were formed, the unique minerals produced in the metamorphosed rocks and, of course, about the wildlife and plant life of area.
For those that want to be physically challenged, we can take you up the Male Hill Summit Trail – about an 1 hour climb up loose rocks where, once you reach the summit, you will have a stunning panoramic view of the area (on most days) that stretches over to the Okavango Delta, more than 40 kilometers away.
All in all, this trip provides the visitor an experience with a difference – try it, you’ll like it!
